LITTLE MIX
On this week’s episode of The Jonathan Ross Show, Jonathan is joined by broadcaster Jeremy Clarkson; globally successful girlband, Little Mix; comedian Micky Flanagan and music superstar, Robbie Williams performs.
Former winners of The X Factor and globally successful girl group, Little Mix, joined the sofa and spoke to Jonathan about how their lives have changed since winning the singing competition five years ago, surviving an earthquake in Japan and their new book being therapy.
Leigh-Anne, Perrie, Jade and Jesy - who were put into a band whilst they were contestants on The X Factor - said they could never imagine being soloists now. Jesy said:
“If we were on our own, we’d be terrified. I just love that we - I know it sounds really cheesy - but I love how we support each other and bring out a confidence in each other that we never knew we had. I think if we were on our own, we’d absolutely sh*t ourselves.” Perrie added: “We’d be lonely. I think we experience everything for the first time but together, we can tell each other anything.”
Speaking about the emotional ups and downs over the past few years, including heartbreak, Jesy said:
“That’s what’s lovely about being in a group, we all literally support each other and when we’re going through bad times we can all relate to it.” Leigh-Anne said: “When I split up with my ex, I was thinking ‘I have got my three best friends, what does it matter?’ I’m so lucky to have these girls and that’s how we feel all the time. We’re the best of friends. People don’t believe that we actually get on as well.”
On how the girls have maintained their down-to-earth demeanor, Jade said:
“I think as people we haven’t really changed. Obviously everything around us has changed, we’ve had to adjust to being pop stars, it is a bit weird, we’ve had our moments haven’t we… Getting freebies, we weren’t used to. Before this we were all quite working class, we didn’t have a lot of money but we’ll have it.” Jesy joked, “Jonathan, we absolutely milked it!”
And on how their stardom has affected their families, Jade said:
“They love it, it’s amazing for us as well to be able to almost change their lives, that is an incredible thing. [Perrie] just bought her mum a house…” With Perrie saying, “It’s been my dream.”
Speaking about loving Japan, the girls recounted a story where they were caught up in an Earthquake. Perrie explained:
“Me and Jesy are lying in bed having a little moment, a heart-to-heart and I’m looking at her and the bed is [shaking]... She thought a man had came into our room and started shaking the bed!... We were on the 27th floor!” Jade added: “Leigh-Anne was snapchatting, getting a nice filter!”
Jonathan spoke about the book the girls have released which features more personal aspects of their life. Speaking about that, Jade said:
“It was quite tough. It was like therapy wasn’t it? We sat down with someone and we said all our experiences growing up and stuff. And I liked that the pop star life is obviously very glitzy and glamourous but I like that this time we were very honest and said things that we wouldn’t usually talk about and it was nice to show the fans.”
Jesy added:
“The way that we feel about ourselves. Especially in the beginning, we did get a lot of stick [about the way we looked]... I think there’s a lot of pressure, especially for young girls, to look a certain way and when we went on The X Factor we didn’t look that great and we got a lot of stick for it and it was hard. Obviously we’d just been thrown into this whole experience so we’d never experienced anything like this and it was just a bit of a shock to the system. We still get it now but I think we’ve grown a thick skin now to it all. It’s hard especially when you’re so young and you’re not used to people just being able to comment on what you look like and being able to see it in front of your face, it’s hard.”
On the breakdown of Perrie’s relationship with former One Direction star, Zayn Malik, she said:
“For a normal girl to go through something like that it’s hard. I think when the whole world is looking at it and talking about it, you feel a bit [affected by it]. Obviously I didn’t say too much about it, I briefly mentioned it. I wasn’t going to not mention it… You’re in control at the end of the day and I briefly mentioned it, kind of said what happened but I would never get into detail because it is personal.”
The girls said they felt lost when they had time off after five years of working. Perrie said:
“We had a month off not long ago and we literally didn’t know what to do with ourselves, it was really strange. We messaged each other every day asking, ‘what are you doing now?’ ‘what are you up to?’”
When Jonathan asked what the future might hold for the girls and that they might all want to take a break and have families in the future, Leigh-Anne said:
“It’s really weird when you say that. When we have kids, that is just so strange, it will change us. We already said we’re going to have kids at the same time and then we’re going to form another ‘Little Mix’ band.” Jonathan asked, “Like a Junior Mix?” and the girls agreed before Jade added: “We’ll be pushy mothers throwing them on a stage.”
Leigh-Anne decided to teach Jeremy and Jonathan how to twerk.
At the end of the show, all of the guests got in the Top Gear/Grand Tour spirit, racing around the studio in a variety of vehicles on a specially designed race track. Beating petrol heads, Jeremy, Robbie and Micky, Little Mix’s Leigh-Anne won the race!
