On this week’s CORONATION STREET — We have an Exclusive Q&A with LUCY FALLON who plays Bethany Platt.
Why does Bethany like Gary so much?
I think Gary’s the first person recently who has shown quite a lot of interest in Bethany. So she sort of grabs hold of that and that’s why she has feelings for him because she’s so fixated on the fact he wants to help her.
Do you think she believes she is in love with him?
I think because she is quite vulnerable she’s latched herself onto Gary and these feelings so I don’t think they’re real but she thinks they are.
At first Bethany is jealous that Sarah is also going to the gig but then she says she can’t make the gig. How does Bethany’s feelings change?
Bethany thinks she has a chance because when Sarah ends up not being able to go, Gary still says to Bethany that he wants her to come. So Bethany’s like, “Oh, maybe he does still fancy me.” That’s where she tries it on again even though it doesn’t work…
Can you talk us through what happens at the hotel?
Bethany, Faye and Gary go to the hotel and because Gary has asked her to help look after Faye, Bethany reads that as he thinks she’s quite mature. So she gives herself a bit of confidence by drinking vodka and lets herself into his hotel room, trying to make him think she’s really mature; I think in her mind she’s thinking that something is going to happen on this night but she’s wrong.
How does Faye react?
Faye sees Bethany lying on the bed in quite a sultry pose waiting for Gary so Bethany tries to distract her to stop her from saying anything. Now that’s another thing that Bethany has got to keep under wraps - stopping Faye from saying anything to the Platts and Gary.
Can you tell us what happens on Christmas Day?
On Christmas Day, Sarah sees a text on Bethany’s phone from Faye saying how happy Faye is that Bethany is now over Gary. Sarah goes at Bethany and she just feels like horrific as it’s chipped away at her confidence even more.
What happens next?
It causes problems for them on Christmas Day because Sarah she doesn’t want the same thing to happen like it did with Callum - she doesn’t want to bury someone else!
How does Bethany feel when Sarah finds out?
This is just like the edge, she’s completely done now. That’s why she turns to the diet pills and that’s why she collapses on Xmas Day because she’s at her lowest point.
Can you tell us what Bethany is thinking when she turns to the diet pills?
If you look over the eighteen month period and everything she’s been through, things have kept chipping away at her confidence so now she’s just completely broken. So she takes the diet pills because she wants to be in control of herself.
What’s next for Bethany in the New Year?
Well there’s going to be a storyline next year that's quite dark...
